The picture above is of a simple
cooler that I turned into a
12volt refrigerator to augment
the engine drive refrigeration
system on my sailboat.
Climb right into the
cockpit and settle back and I'll
get us something cold to drink.
All right, you want to know how
I can have a frosty drink in
this 100° weather without maxing
out my batteries? Well, I'm
something of a boat
refrigeration expert and I like
to share my knowledge with other
boaters. I know that
refrigeration problems are
always a big problem for cruisers
especially when they're in a
foreign port without a
technician within reach. That's
what this page is all about.
Boat refrigeration used to be a
luxury and most sailboat
cruisers had to make do without
cold drinks and fresh food
products, but nowadays systems
are more reliable and are simple
enough to be maintained by even
the novice technician. Over the
past 25 years I've worked with
thousands of boat owners helping
them to select and maintain
refrigeration systems for their
boat. Over the years I've seen
just about every boat
refrigeration system that is
available and the problems that
can occur. Most of these
problems could have been solved
or prevented by the boat owner
with just a little basic
refrigeration know-how.
You can also check my FORUM as
it has questions and answers on
many of the problems that
boaters have with their
refrigeration systems.
I've included some of
the basic information on this
site that
should give you a good
background if you are
considering putting a
refrigeration system in your
boat and my Book
Do-It-Yourself Boat
Refrigeration will supply
you with everything you need to
know to install or maintain a
refrigeration system on your
boat. If you are only interested
in installing and maintaining a
12/24 volt unit, then my book
